Main Street America’s fall survey summary describes improving confidence and profits among respondents, alongside continuing difficulty finding new customers, keeping cash flowing and managing inventory costs. The organization published its results on October 22, following a survey open from September 3 through September 28, 2026.

The survey drew responses from 1,568 small-business owners across all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. It was supported by business insurer AmTrust. Main Street America regularly surveys businesses in Main Street districts. Its summary does not establish that this sample represents all American small businesses.

For someone considering a small venture, the combination is more useful than a simple boom-or-bust headline. Confidence and operating pressure can exist at the same time. A promising idea still needs customers, manageable expenses and room for an uneven month.

A practical application is to keep two conversations separate: Is there a genuine reason to be optimistic about this business, and what could make the next few months difficult? There can be good reasons for optimism and real operating challenges at the same time.
